Indians grab easy first round victory

Wednesday, October 25, 2017
The Hayti defense, including many junior varsity players, kept the Crystal City offense under 60 yards of total offense.

In first-round action of Class 1 District football, the Hayti Indians (8-2) went on the warpath and shut out the Crystal City Hornets 58-0. The winless Hornets – who only dressed out 18 players – were no doubt outmanned by the ninth-ranked Indians, but Hayti must be recognized for playing an outstanding football game. The Indians’ junior varsity squad and other reserves are credited with playing almost three quarters of the game. To go along with the victory, junior and 2016 All-State honoree, Ivory Winters, set a new Hayti single-season scoring mark of 188 points, eclipsing the old record set last year of 174.

From the outset, the game was lopsided. The Indians scored 34 points in the first quarter, ignited by a 60-yard Ivory Winters run at the 11:44 mark of the first period. Tylor Wooden’s extra point attempt was good. With 8:46 showing on the clock, Winters sprinted across the goal line for another Hayti TD. With Wooden’s PAT, Hayti went up 14-0.

Hayti cranked up the passing game midway through the first period, as Indian quarterback Chrivonate Moore hooked up with Winters for a 26-yard reception and score. The defense would get on the scoring as well when John Agnew picked up a Hornet fumble and scampered 27 yards for the touchdown. Agnew would then get in on the offensive action when Chrivontae Moore connected with him for an 18-yard touchdown pass. Winters collected the two points on the 2-point attempt and Hayti took a commanding 34-0 lead as the first quarter came to a close.

With many reserves in for the remainder of the game, Hayti’s scoring pace leveled out. In the second quarter, Agnew blasted across the line of scrimmage for a 59-yard touchdown run. Offensive lineman Jordan Allison carried the ball across the goal line for the 2-point conversion, giving the Indians a 42-0 advantage.

In the third period, Damorri Reed was unleashed for an 8-yard touchdown blast, and DeAnthony Reed picked up the 2-point conversion. At the conclusion the third period, the Indians had a cushiony 50-0 lead. Hayti added to the carnage with one more touchdown in the final frame when Quindale Malone blasted across the goal line for six points. Lineman Tyler Green got the tote for a successful 2-point conversion attempt. As the final seconds of the fourth period ticked away and when the horn sounded, Hayti had recorded a massive 58-0 lambasting of the hapless Hornets. Perhaps next year the Hornets can regroup and score a few wins.

As for stats, Hayti, as one might expect, dominated. The Indians accumulated 372 total yards of offense to the Hornets’ 52. Crystal City managed only two first downs, but the Indians had 15. Through the air, Moore recorded 49 yards and went 3-for-3. Winters picked up 85 yards on the ground on four carries, while TreCharles McCoy was 4-for-55.

On the defensive side of the ball, Xavier Jamerson paced the Indians with four tackles. DeAnthony Reed logged in three tackles, and Winters had two tackles and three assists. LaKeith Robinson and Emmanuel Johnson had three assists each.

Hayti will host Chaffee at 7 p.m. this Friday night, Oct. 27 for the second round of Class 1 District 1 competition. The winner will play the winner of the Valle Catholic-Portageville game for the district title Friday, Nov. 3.
