SOUTH PEMISCOT’S RILEY CAIN SIGNS TO PLAY BASEBALL AT REND LAKE COLLEGE

Two thousand seventeen South Pemiscot graduate Riley Cain finally got the call he was waiting for after attending the Ultimate Sports Baseball Showcase July 5 in Kennett.

“I waited until this summer to sign,” Cain said. “I went to a showcase in Kennett and had six schools call me after I attended it. Rend Lake had a lot of interest in me, and I had a lot of interest in them.”

Cain elected to sign to play baseball with Rend Lake College in Ina, Ill., July 13.

Cain put up impressive offensive and pitching statistics his senior season at South Pemiscot.

Cain finished his senior year as shortstop batting .548 with five home runs and 18 RBIs with 32 runs scored. Cain went 5-1 with a 1.92 ERA on the mound. He was named Bootheel Conference Player of the Year and was part of a South Pemiscot squad that finished 15-8 and advanced to the Class 2 state quarterfinals.

“We finally realized what team baseball was my last year,” Cain said. “We learned how to play together instead of for individual stats.”

Cain played baseball and basketball at South Pemiscot but says baseball has always been his first sport.

“I’ve picked a baseball up every day since I can remember”, Cain said. “It was just a first love. I grew up around it more than other sports. I was the little kid that wanted to play catch with his brothers in high school. It’s just always been a part of my life.”

Cain says he plans on majoring in physical education and wants to be a baseball coach after college.

“I’d like to thank everyone at South Pemiscot school district - Jason House, Brian Gunnels and Renee Golden,” Cain said. “They helped me out a great deal. I’d also like to thank Jon David French from Kennett.”
