Wednesday, September 20, 2017

The Steele City Council met in regular session Monday, Sept. 11. The first item on the agenda was to pay the bills in the amount of $87,054.54.

Mike Lee contacted Mayor Keith Samford to ask that he be reimbursed for materials bought for painting at the airport. The mayor explained that someone had painted most of the area, but never returned to complete the job or receive payment. The aldermen decided to reimburse Lee.

The city received sealed bids for lawn mowers and the humane officer truck. They received $750.

Next, the aldermen passed two ordinances, the tax rate ordinance #581 and the chicken ordinance #580.

Mayor Samford noted that Steele is hosting the Veterans Day Parade this year. The parade will start at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10 at the Church of Christ and end at South Pemiscot Schools. Ceremonies will begin at 2 p.m. in the Multipurpose building. Alderman Randy McDaniel said the Steele Chamber of Commerce is going to provide a chili dinner for the veterans and their families.

The council gave several water adjustments. Mayor Samford said $944.11 was spent to repair the roof. The aldermen passed a motion to get half of the money out of the general fund to pay for it. Alderman McDaniel said that the park board was needing a couple of people to add as members. Herman Rogers and Brandon Flowers were recommended.

Steele Chief of Police Billy Joe Stanfield said Kevin Hopkins, whom the city was to send to the police academy, is no longer going on the city’s funds.

Mayor Samford also reported that several people will be at the new fire station site Wednesday, Sept. 20 to show the city a list of conditions that are required to get the funds for the new station. He believes the city will be compliant.

Next, the council discussed the sewer pumps. The mayor said the pumps are in, and they are waiting for them to be installed.

A motion was passed to begin using Aramark to supply uniforms to city of Steele employees. They also passed a motion for Mayor Samford to go to Springfield on the 23rd to attend a banquet for Sam Hamra.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Steele City Council is at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2.
