Steele Police Chief Billy Joe Stanfield reports that during the overnight hours of Monday, Nov. 20, Officer Joshua Carter responded to the Deerfield Travel Center in reference to a stolen motor vehicle.

“Officer Carter subsequently located the stolen vehicle and conducted a felony traffic stop,” said Chief Stanfield. “The driver/suspect was then apprehended and was identified as being Johnny Lee Phillips, 40, who surrendered to Officer Carter without any incident.”

Phillips was wanted out of Kennett, Mo., in connection to a shooting in which Phillips allegedly shot a man.

Pemiscot County deputies quickly arrived on scene to assist Steele Police Department with the arrest and transported Phillips to the Dunklin County Jail.

Phillips of White Oak, Mo., had an active warrant for his arrest through Dunklin County charging him with first-degree assault - serious physical injury, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon and stealing of a motor vehicle (bond of $250,000).

Steele Police will file additional felony charges on Phillips with the Pemiscot County prosecuting attorney.
