The R-3 Bulldogs hosted the Delta C-7 Chargers in a good, ol’ fashioned eighth-grade basketball barnburner last Thursday night, Nov. 9. With a large crowd on hand at the Bulldogs’ gym, Coach Matthew Ball and his Delta C-7 eighth graders came to play, but the Bulldogs were ready for them, fresh off a win Monday night. In a hard-fought game, Delta C-7 went on to grab the win, 53-47.

The first quarter started out rough for Coach Wes Richardson and his Bulldogs as they dug themselves into an early 10-2 hole. But, the Bulldogs came back like a steamroller, led by two late-quarter buckets by Lucas Creekmore. The first period ended with the Chargers up by four points, 16-12.

In the second quarter, Creekmore, kept the Bulldogs close until about midway through the frame when the Chargers took control of the game, led by Jacob Johnson and Maurion Hattiex. Going into the locker rooms, Delta C-7 had extended their lead to 37-21.

Scoring only two points, the Chargers went cold in the third period, and the Bulldogs trounced, shrinking the Charger lead to six points, 39-33. Early in the fourth frame, R-3’s Thomas Hays knocked down a basket to put the Bulldogs within two points, 39-37. With the help of a precision assist from Pearce Watkins, Lucas Creekmore sank a 2-pointer to tie the game at 41.

Maurion Hattiex fired a 3-point basket to send the Chargers ahead, 44-41. Then, once again, Pearce Watkins let loose another laser-guided assist, this time to Leyton Stateler for the goal. The Bulldogs moved within a point, 44-43. The Chargers were not done, however, as Jacob Johnson drilled one from beyond the arc making the score 47-43, Delta C-7.

Hattiex cranked out another 3-point shot, and the Chargers extended their lead to 50-44. Not to be outdone, Thomas Hays answered with 3-pointer of his own, and the Bulldogs were back in business, cutting the Chargers’ lead to three, 47-50. From that point onward, with under 2:00 on the clock, the Chargers stopped the Bulldogs’ offense, and Delta C-7 held on for the 53-47 win.
