For the second year in a row, the Hayti Indians (9-3) came up short in the Missouri Class 1 District championship game against the Valle Catholic Warriors (11-1). Ranked in the top three all season, Coach Dominique Robinson was well aware that Valle had reloaded – once again this year. With optimism in tow, the Indians boarded the bus and headed north to St. Genevieve last Friday night, Nov. 3. However, when the horn sounded at the end of four, the Indians came up short on the big board in the end zone by a score of 42-18.

As for the game itself, there are couple of notable statistics that significantly stand out. First, Hayti was penalized 17 times for 132 yards; the yellows were flying against the Indians. Second, Valle only outgained Hayti in total yardage by a few, 335-308. Punts were fairly even, with Valle at 3 for 101 yards and Hayti with 4 for 136. However, one glaring issue for the Indians was time of possession and first downs. Valle’s offense was on the field for a good portion of the first half and picked up 22 first downs to Hayti’s 10.

From midway through the second quarter through the end of the game, Hayti was exceptionally competitive and outscored the Warriors three touchdowns to two. The primary issue that kept the Indians on their heels was the early 28-0 hole they got themselves into, and that occurred within the first 13 minutes of the game.

With the Indians battling two teams – one in shoulder pads and the other in black and white uniforms and caps – it just was not Hayti’s night, despite outgaining the Warriors through the air, 249 yards to 139. Hayti’s junior signal-caller, Chrivontae Moore, was 14-of-27 passing with three TDs and a pair of interceptions. Moore also gained 62 yards on the ground.

As noted, the Warriors scored four touchdowns within the first 13 minutes of the game, but the Indians’ defense stepped it up for the remainder of the contest, limiting Valle to just two more scores in the final 35 minutes of the game, or nearly three full quarters. Hayti’s first TD of the night came with just two seconds remaining in the first half when Chrivontae Moore connected with John Agnew for a 26-yard pass play. The Indians would go into the locker room down 28-6.

After Valle struck first in the third period, Hayti recorded their second TD of the night with a Chrivontae Moore to Ivory Winters pass for 15-yards and the score, making the score 35-12 with 2:39 showing on the third quarter clock. Winters would finish the night with 111 receiving yards on seven receptions. Hayti put one more touchdown in the books at the 1:02 mark in the final quarter as Moore once again found the open man for the TD reception. This time it was Tylor Wooden for 39 yards.

As might be expected, Norshawn McIntyre proved to be a nightmare for the Valle offense on numerous plays. McIntyre put nine tackles and one assist in the record books. Tylor Wooden had a great defensive outing as well, making eight tackles, one assist and one sack. As usual, Ivory Winters was on the prowl for the Indian defense with seven tackles, two assists and a sack. Kelvion Presberry cut loose as well, making five tackles. Matthew Wilson was solid on D for the Indians with five tackles and an assist. Louis Wright and John Agnew logged in three tackles and one assist each.
