Indians and Bulldogs play tripleheader

Late October means junior high basketball in the Missouri Bootheel, and the Hayti Indians and South Pemiscot Bulldogs are in full swing this season. Last Monday night, Oct. 23, South Pemiscot hosted Hayti for a tripleheader in the school’s Multipurpose Building. With a packed house on hand to enjoy the action, the Indians won two of three games.

The first win of the night went to Hayti as the Lady Indians defeated the Lady Bulldogs 41-12. Amiya Johnson paced Hayti with 29 points. Kiondra Downey tossed in five points, while Kristin Burnett, Ta’Niyah Payne and Kanasia Borders all had two points each. Carlee Bell added a point for the Lady Indians. For South Pemiscot, Brandy Whisnant led the way with six points. Honesty Fonda sank four points and Olivia House House had two.

In the seventh grade boys game, South Pemiscot beat Hayti 33-22. Leading the Bulldogs’ scoring attack was AJ Wilbourn with 11 points. Jayden Farmer knocked down nine points, and Donta Jackson poured in eight. Logan Welch tacked on three points, and Deangelo Taylor had a bucket for South Pemiscot. For the Indians, Elijah Burnette drained 11 points. Kormarion Johnson hit a 3-pointer, and Kayne Jones scored five points. Jeremiah Brown tacked on a basket for Hayti.

The eighth grade game saw the Indians soundly defeat South Pemiscot 62-29. Evontrez Hill was on fire, knocking down 34 points on the night. Kylan Woods drilled eight points, and Lee Taylor and Thomdrecus Ross tossed in six points apiece. Brandon Rowe and Kortavion Johnson added four points each for Hayti.

For the Bulldogs, Shawn Kinnon and AJ Wilbourn hit seven points apiece. Brevin Carlise, Mark Jones and Zach Southern pitched in three points each, while Sukhdeep Singh and Donta Jackson added two points apiece for the Bulldogs.
