Wednesday, October 25, 2017

Caruthersville High School students played their fourth annual powder puff football game for cancer awareness on Thursday, October 12. Each grade selected a team of female players, male student were coaches and cheer leaders. The Caruthersville student Counsel sponsors the event each year for cancer awareness, with all proceeds going to those tackling cancer. Many students and community members volunteered in a variety of ways which made this evening a great success.

Games between each grade would be 20 minutes long. The first game to be played was between the Freshmen and Sophomore girls. The second would be between the Junior and Senior girls. The final game would be the winner of each of the previous games. Each team played on an 80-yard field.

In the Freshmen Sophomore game, the Freshmen struck first making a touchdown fairly quickly. The point after was no good. 6-0 Freshman. The Sophomores took their try at heading for the goal, but fumbled the ball. The Freshmen recovered and again started toward their end zone. Again, the Freshmen scored with no extra point. 12-0 Freshmen. The Sophomores again tried to pass, this time they were successful, gaining the needed yardage to keep the ball moving. They then switched to a running game. Using their quickest player, they made it into the end zone. The point after as no good. 12-6 Freshmen. With time running out the Freshmen made their way in to the end zone for the third and final time. Time was up; the Freshmen won game one 18-6.

Between the games was a half-time show put on by the Powder Puff Cheerleaders. As always, this show was fun to watch. After the cheerleaders performed, there was a special surprise presentation for a local resident, Tina Cook, who is currently undergoing cancer treatments. The Student Council presented Tina with $500 dollars raised specifically for her. All cancer survivors were honored during the halftime show as well. The powder puff game raised over $1000 for cancer research, not counting the money raised for Tina

Game two saw the Seniors and Juniors match up. The game started with an interception of the Junior pass. Kaylee Jones made a wonderful interception, but Jones took the ball to the wrong end zone. Even with a mistake created by over anxious players wanting to win, the Seniors took over and really scored a touchdown. The extra point was no good. Seniors led 6-0. The Juniors again tried to take care of business, but had to give the ball up on downs. The two teams continued in similar fashion, neither gained any additional points. Therefore, the Seniors won 6-0 and would take on the Freshman in the final game of the evening.

The final game of the night was between the Seniors and the Freshmen. This battle was fierce. The Seniors quickly tried to unsettle the Freshmen, recovering a fumbled ball and taking over possession. Unfortunately, the Seniors were unable to covert the recovery into points. The Freshmen managed to recover another fumble they made then made the first touchdown of the matchup. The extra point was no good. Freshmen were ahead 6-0. The Seniors were not to be messed with and quickly took the ball down field gaining a quick touchdown. Their extra point was also no good. The score was tied at 6-6. Each team battled back and forth, neither gave up points to the other. Time ran out and the teams went onto overtime. Overtime requires each team start on the 20-yard line and attempt a touchdown in 4-plays. The two teams battled through two overtime periods before the Seniors managed to gain a touchdown wining the trophy for the 2017 Tiger Powder Puff game.
