Abraham Baruck Barkovitz, 99, of Hayti passed away September 28, 2017 at Pemiscot Memorial Hospital in Hayti. He was born February 1, 1918 in Wardell to the late Ben H. and Rosa Kohn Barkovitz. He was married to Patricia Ann Evans for 56 years. He was co-owner of Barkovitz Store with his brother and sister-in-law, Noah and Gerry Barkovitz for 55 years. After Noah retired, Abe continued with the business operating the Barkovitz Men’s Store for eight more years, retiring in 2011 at age 93. He was friend to all, waiting on generations of customers, fitting 5 generations of children for their first pair of baby-walking shoes, and enjoying every minute of it.

He graduated Hayti High School and Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA with a Bachelor of Science Chemical Engineering Degree. He served honorably for 4 years in the U.S. Army Corp during WWII as a flight engineer instructor on B-17’s and B-29’s. He was a member of Temple Israel in Blytheville, AR. Abe was also a member of Hayti Rotary Club for 40 years, Hayti Chamber of Commerce, Caruthersville Chamber of Commerce, and also co-founder of the “Triangle Boat Club”. He enjoyed his time with each club very much.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Noah and Jacob Barkovitz, and his beloved sister, Esther Kaplan.

He is survived by his loving wife, Pat, two sons, David and wife Maggie, Barry, and one daughter Karen and her husband Lonnie Hunt.

He is also survived by 4 nephews, Phil (Tammie) and Alan (Debra) Barkovitz, Jeffrey and Joel (Loraine) Kaplan, 4 nieces, Ellen (Gary) O’Kelly, Lynn (Tim) Parshall, Carol Ann (Don) Woolfolk, and Tammy (Ted) Becker, a host of other relatives, and many, many friends.

Graveside services were held Saturday, October 1, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery in Hayti with Bro. Doug Wahls officiating. Pallbearers were David and Barry Barkovitz, Lonnie Hunt, Martin Leland, Tim Lovins, and Martin Ray.
