Varsity Lady Bulldogs defeat Cooter

Coach Jackie Booker and her South Pemiscot varsity Lady Bulldogs squared off against the Cooter Lady Wildcats in volleyball action at the South Pemiscot gym Tuesday night, Sept. 19. Although the match was tight, South Pemiscot came out on top in two sets, 25-18, 25-23.

Sabre Amerson got the ball rolling in the first set for South Pemiscot with a strong attack for the ‘Dogs’ first point. Amerson would go on to record several kills to help the Lady ‘Dogs secure the victory. With the score at 3-3, Damaris Farmer got into the act, slamming a pair of kills of her own, as Amerson continued with solid attacks. Despite effective offensive firepower from South Pemiscot, Cooter went up by a point, 12-11 and then 14-12.

Led by a Sabre Amerson ace, South Pemiscot regained the momentum and tied the game at 17, and then at 18, with a Damaris Farmer back-row hit for the game-tying point. Lia Spears served well to help set the tone for Addison Nelson to rattle off three consecutive kills. Middle hitter Damaris Farmer slammed home the final kill of the set to give the Lady ‘Dogs the set victory, 25-18.

The second set, although won by South Pemiscot, was even tighter. The set featured nine tied scores. South Pemiscot started the set strong, jumping out to an early 4-1 lead. Sabre Amerson recorded two more kills, and Lizzy Gray delivered an effective string of stout serves to help give the lead back to South Pemiscot, 13-11.

For the next few minutes, the two south county rivals went back and forth with the scoring, tying the game at 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23. Through the knotted-up scores, Damaris Farmer, Sabre Amerson and Addison kept the ship afloat for the Lady ‘Dogs with a sequence of powerful kills, including a finesse tip from Nelson. Lizzy Gray contributed a key attack point to tie the game at 21, keeping the Wildcats at bay. Farmer finished off the set and match with a tipped attack for the final point of the game. South Pemiscot edged out Cooter 25-23 to get the set win and match victory.

The junior varsity Lady Bulldogs fell to Cooter in three sets: 25-18, 21-25, 25-18. Tamiya Starks recorded several kills and aces. Makenzie Redden and Hadley Hoskins added kills, as did Aliyah Taylor and Sarah Eddleman. Coming off an injury, Darcey Morton served up an ace.
