According to Sheriff Tommy Greenwell, the Pemiscot County Sheriff’s office is investigating a shooting that occurred at 39 2nd Street in Deering, Mo.

“Pemiscot County 911 received a call of an accidental shooting at 12:39 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10,” said Sheriff Greenwell. “Deputies arrived on the scene at 12:51 p.m. and discovered that a 16-year-old male had been shot in the head by a 17-year-old male. The victim was flown from the scene by helicopter to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., then transferred to the MED in Memphis.”

An initial investigation indicated the victim and the suspect knew each other. The suspect stated he was only trying to scare the victim and did not think the gun was loaded when he pulled the trigger.

Arrested at the scene was Joseph O. Mooney, 17, of Deering for assault-first degree, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a firearm. He is currently incarcerated at the Pemiscot County Justice Center on a 24-hour hold. The case has been forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for the filing of formal charges.
