Hayti City Hall moves to new, temporary location

Hayti city employees and Mayor Lisa Green were busy Monday moving the offices of Hayti City Hall to its temporary location.

Going back to her days as a city alderman, Hayti mayor Lisa Green has been thinking of ways to either improve the facilities of city hall, or even better, find the funds to construct a new one. Over the past several years, Green says, Hayti City Hall has continued to fall into a state of disrepair. With crumbling steps at the police department, cracks on the exterior of the building and progressively worsening leaks from the roof, Green and the Hayti City Council determined in 2016 that it was time to do something.

“We looked into putting a tax on the ballot, and we got that passed in April by a pretty good margin,” Green said. “We just received word the other day that we have 100 percent of the funding available, so now we are in the process of moving and getting ready to start the construction plans.”

On Monday morning, Sept. 11, Green and several Hayti city employees were busy moving furniture, desks, filing cabinets and even decorative plants to city hall’s new, temporary location at 215 South 3rd Street, the site of the old Missouri Delta Bank building. The building – located between Hayti Medical Center and First Baptist Church of Hayti – was most recently occupied by attorney Shawn D. Young.

“That’s where we will be for the next 16 to 24 months. Our projected date to be in the new city hall building is April of 2019,” Green said. “Today, we are moving all the offices that we can, but the water office will not go today because of water bills.”

The offices of Hayti City Hall will be closed the remainder of this week but will reopen at the new location Monday morning, Sept. 18. All urgent calls regarding street or water issues should be made to (573) 359-0632 or (573) 359-4590. Payments may still be dropped off at the current night deposit box, which will be checked multiple times daily. For the time being, Green says, the Hayti Police Department will remain in city hall, but will be moving to the new location soon.
