Bulldogs begin 2017 fall season

The South Pemiscot Bulldogs began their 2017 fall baseball season Friday, Aug. 18, falling to Eminence 10-0. The Bulldogs managed three hits off the bats of Ryan Russell, Kevin Burton and Axel Moreno. Ryan Russell got the starting nod, fanning five and giving up six hits and three earned runs.

On Saturday, Aug. 19, the Bulldogs lost to Arcadia Valley by the score of 15-8. In the batter’s box, Keith Guyton blasted a triple, while Ross Russell, Ryan Russell, Axel Moreno and Luke Southern had one hit apiece. Ross Russell, Ashton Thompson, Harley Baxter and Johnny Finley pitched for South Pemiscot. Russell struck out two and did not allow an earned run.

Later in the day on Aug. 19, South Pemiscot fell to Southern Reynolds, 11-2. The ‘Dogs had six hits, led by Ryan Russell with a double and single. Colton McCulloch swatted a double, while Keith Guyton, Axel Moreno and Luke Southern had one hit each. South Pemiscot pitchers were Guyton, Moreno, Layne McCormick, Grant Payne and Blake Romhilt.

In their fourth away game in a row, the Bulldogs came up short on the scoreboard to Gideon by just two runs, 7-5. Keith Guyton and Ryan Russell recorded a double each, and Kevin Burton and Ross Russell had one hit apiece. Burton was the starting pitcher, allowing two hits and no earned runs while striking out six batters. Ross Russell pitched three innings, giving up two earned runs off six hits.

The Bulldogs finally made it to their home field Friday, Aug. 25, but lost to the always-tough Oran Eagles, 11-1. Four Bulldog batters had one hit each: Keith Guyton, Colton McCulloch, Kevin Burton and Ross Russell. Ryan Russell, on the mound, put in six innings of work and recorded nine strikeouts.

South Pemiscot got their first win of the season Monday, Aug. 28, defeating Delta C-7 15-0. At the plate, Keith Guyton ripped a double and single as Ryan Russell and Ross Russell slapped a pair of singles apiece. Colton McCulloch blasted an over-the-fence home run, and Kevin Burton smacked a double. Johnny Finley and Harley Baxter had one hit apiece. Burton pitched four innings of one-hit ball, striking out 10.

On Tuesday, Aug. 29, the ‘Dogs record their second win of the season with a 7-2 victory over Holcomb. Kevin Burton paced the ‘Dogs in the batter’s box with a double and two singles. Colton Golden ripped a double and single, and Ross Russell smacked a pair of hits. Other hitters were Ryan Russell, Colton McCulloch and Axel Moreno. Ross Russell pitched 6 2/3 innings, striking out eight and allowing one earned run off four hits.
