#28 Keara Johnson taking a bump

The Lady Tigers Volleyball teams started their season against Southland on Monday night. Both the Junior Varsity (JV) and Varsity (V) won their matches in two games each.

The JV started off slow, but picked up the pace in the first game of the set. In the second game of the set, there was some back and forth in the lead. The defensive play of the Lady Tigers eventually pulled ahead and took the second game and the match. This squad, made up mostly of freshmen, have been working together since middle school according to Coach Kim McCall. She is pleased with their efforts, especially the serves delivered by freshman Madisyn Swan, who according to Coach McCall, had 7 or 8 aces on the night.

The Varsity played well right from the start. A trio of players returning from last year, seniors Emma Middleton, Hannah Vaughn and sophomore Keara Johnson made the defenses of the varsity team more than Southland could handle. Southland scored well and played well, but the combination of blocks and attacks by this seasoned trio made it hard for the Southland team to catch up and keep up. Adding to the starting lineup this year are Melissa Ibarra, Hannah Coleman, Mallory Faulkner and Kaylee Jones. After taking the first game, the varsity team dominated from the beginning of the second game. Solid serves and more blocking by the Lady Tigers made volleys difficult for the Southland team. The Varsity Lady Tigers took their match in two games as well.

Even though she says there are things to work on, Coach McCall is pleased with the initial efforts of her teams. McCall said freshman Mallory Faulkner has stepped up to assist with net action on the varsity team. Caruthersville’s next home game is September 5 against Hayti.
