Pemiscot Redbirds split state tourney

Summer baseball is winding down for local traveling teams. The 12 and under Pemiscot Redbirds finished their season strong making their way to the State tournament in Cape Girardeau July 13-16. The Redbirds finished their season with a 14-12 record and played four games in the tournament, splitting the tournament with a 2-2 record.

After a tough loss in the first game of the tournament against Kennett, the team came back in game two to win a nail biter against Carl Junction. The Redbirds started off strong putting up 3 runs in the first inning and continued hitting for the next two innings. The Carl Junction team came in strong as well and kept the game interesting right up to the end. The Redbirds managed to edge out Carl Junction with a score of 7-6. Gabriel MacLevain was the starting pitcher and was credited with the win.

Game three was against the Sikeston team. The Redbirds again came out strong and never looked back. Redbird bats kept adding to the score each inning. The Sikeston team made an attempt to limit the Redbird hitting streak, but in the end the Redbirds outscored Sikeston by a score of 11-1. The winning pitcher was Thomas Frakes. Coach Hays said of the game, “We came out with our bats hot and aggressive base running. Hopefully, our Redbird bats will remain hot and our pitchers will stay the course as we see Mineral Area tomorrow.”

Game four was against Mineral Area. Unfortunately, the hitting of the Mineral Area club was stronger than the Redbirds, and they fell by a score of 17-6. With the second loss, this Redbirds were eliminated from the tournament. Pitching was Hayden Nazerenus. Coach Hays summed up the game saying, “The boys fought to stay in it hitting the balls hard, but just couldn’t find any gaps in the Mineral Area defense. Better luck next year Birds!” Coach Hays said of the season, “We had a great time and we are still a young team with tons of potential. The future is bright for this young group of players.”
