DIY at the Library

Caruthersville Public Library is ready to support area citizens who have a dream – to start their own business, grow and preserve their own food, renovate or update their home, or learn a new skill. This is through a new collection of books made available through a Public Library Collection Development Grant, authorized through funding appropriated through Congress and administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the MO Secretary of State, Jay Ashcroft.

“Our city and surrounding area have a great need for entrepreneurs and those who aren’t afraid to step out and start their own business. Many of these things can be home-based businesses, involving online sites like eBay and Etsy and even in-home businesses like a day care. We now have items to support all aspects of starting a new business. All you need is a dream!”, said Caruthersville Public Library Director Teresa Tidwell.

A large number of children’s “Makerspace” books were also made possible with this grant and are on display in the Children’s Room at the library, featuring crafts and creative projects for children, including coding books that contain activities which tie-in with the other recent Technology Mini-grant received by the library for laptops and its weekly programming activity, “Hour of Code”. These new books have been flying off the shelves during the Summer Reading program, “Build a Better World” and its Thursday Crafternoon sessions.

The DIY books are featured in the main library with a special display and in the Non-fiction section of the new books shelves, with new titles currently arriving daily. Come in to see all that is available and begin to make your own dream for your future come true.
