The South Pemiscot Bulldogs faced the St. Vincent Indians in Regional Class 2 State play on Wednesday evening. The weather was threatening as the teams took the field. Sprinkles of rain came and went as fans watched the sky. Dark clouds moved in and out over the playing field. South Pemiscot hosted the St. Vincent Indians, but were labeled as the visiting team due to a coin toss. “I was very proud of my guys”, said Coach House. He continued, “We came out and laid it on the line and I felt like our kids kept battling and we didn’t let up until the last out. You try to coach the kids into doing, stand there and compete until the end. And whatever happens at the end, happens.” A game ending single scored a RBI in the bottom of the seventh put the Bulldogs on the wrong end of a 7-6 defeat.

Riley Cain was starting pitcher for South Pemiscot and pitched 6 innings. The Bulldogs had nine hits in the back and forth battle with St. Vincent. St. Vincent started the scoring in the second inning, but the Bulldogs quickly answered and took the lead temporarily. The third inning saw five runs score between the two teams and kept the hopes high for the Bulldogs. But the Indians answered with a strong fourth inning pulling ahead again. The score tied up again in the fifth inning and stayed tied until the bottom of the seventh.

After the first batter in the bottom of the seventh hit a single, lightning caused a short weather delay. The clouds opened up and everyone went scurrying for cover until the cloud burst past. Once play resumed, another base hit and an intentional walk loaded the bases. Unfortunately, closing pitcher McCullouch couldn’t close the inning and send it into extra innings. A single by St. Vincent sealed the deal. “McCullouch goes out there and competes, and he did a good job. The last kid did a good job staying with the ball and hitting it to the right side. Even if we catch the ball right there, I think they still score. That’s just part of it”, said Coach House.

When asked about his players, Coach House said, “I graduate seven. I wouldn’t want to go to another game without them (seniors) and they battled. They were the leaders of the team and they come out and they showed leadership for our program and I felt like did us in a great way.”
