The Caruthersville Humane Society (PAWS) in Hayti held its’ 11th annual John Van Ausdall Memorial 5K run/2mile walk in Caruthersville Saturday and event organizers said that it was a very successful event. “We were all worried about weather, but it held and we were able to get the race in,” CHS President Karol Wilcox said, “We had a great group of runners and walkers and the event raised much needed funds for the shelter.” The run is held every year in late April or early May and raises funds for the no-kill animal shelter located in Hayti, MO. The event was named after long time animal advocate John VanAusdall. “We appreciate all of the people who participated and all of our sponsors of the event,” Wilcox said, “These funds are desperately needed to continue the operation of the shelter.” Wilcox says the shelter has seen a spike in owner surrendered animals because of economic reasons and a spike in the number of people needing to utilize low cost spay and neuters along with the emergency “Helping Hands” program for temporary assistance with their animals. “We wish to thank the City of Caruthersville for being such a great host, along with the Police Department and the Public Library, along with KTMO radio and Monte Lyons.
